Written Reflections for Projects

Every project that is posted on the class blogs should include a written reflection.

This can be either:

An overall reflection of the thought & creation process during the project. Each student should also discuss their best image from your finished body of work.

This reflection should include:

  • Camera Settings and how they used to create specific effects in the image

  • The Light that was used and the qualities that were beneficial to the image

  • The Approach to the Composition (was this planned or just in the moment)

  • Digital touch ups that were significant to the finished piece

  • Final thoughts on the liking or disliking of the finished piece

Or

A detailed discussion for no less than 50% of the assigned number of photographs in the given assignment. (If there are 6 assigned photographs, a student must reflect on at least 3)

These reflections should include:

  • Camera Settings and how they used to create specific effects in the image

  • The Light that was used and the qualities that were beneficial to the image

  • The Approach to the Composition (was this planned or just in the moment)

  • Digital touch ups that were significant to the finished piece

  • Final thoughts on the liking or disliking of the finished piece

Weekly Journals

Students are required to comment on at least one students blog as part of the weekly assignment.

Due Every Wednesday comments Due Friday

Option #1

Upload and discuss a photo that was taken recently (within a month of upload).  This can be a photo that was taken during practice shoots or assigned projects, but final images for journals should not be used for weekly journals.  Final images will be posted separately.

                Details to discuss:

                        - Describe the visual details of the posted photograph.  What was it that you were attempting to capture in you photograph?  Were you successful in creating a strong photograph?

                        - Describe the approach you took to composing and capturing the image. Was this easy to approach?  Were there certain challenges to approaching your subject?

                        - What was the light like when you were approaching your subject?  What kind of light did you end up shooting in?  Was it ideal for the subject?  Would you have liked it to be different? If so, How?

                        - Would you change anything in the photo if you could go back to the moment your camera clicked for that frame?

                        - What equipment and settings were used to take the photograph? Discuss lens choice, Camera mode, & Settings ISO, Aperture, & Shutter Speed.  Did you use a Tripod?

                       - What changes were made if needed in post processing?

Option #2

Discuss a missed photographic opportunity that occurred within the last week.  This could be something that occurred in or out of school.

                Details to discuss:

                        - Describe the visual details of the photos you would have liked to take and why they were missed (while shooting, lasted only a brief moment of time, a camera was unavailable at that time, etc.).

                        - Can the scene be revisited or was it a onetime opportunity?

                        - Describe in detail what it was that you wanted to photograph: Person, Place, Animal, Thing, Event, etc.

                        - Overall composition: "Paint a literary picture" of the missed photograph.  Describe the location of specific important details within the composed scene you imagined for the photograph. Reference any of the present elements of design that you

noticed (texture, shape, line, pattern, etc.)

                      - Describe the Location of the missed opportunity.  Where was this missed photographic opportunity? Will it be in the same place again, would you need to hunt it down, or was it a one time opportunity?

                        - What time of day was it when you saw it? How do you think it would look under different lighting conditions? (Morning, Afternoon, Night, Sunny, Rainy, Cloudy, etc.)

                        - How would it need to be shot? (Horizontal/Vertical) What Equipment & Settings would be needed to capture the photograph? Lens type / Tripod / ISO / Shutter Speed / Aperture

                        - Would the photograph look best in B&W or color?
