CLASS EXPECTATIONS & COURSE OUTLINE

 

This course is designed for the motivated photography student. This is a continuation of the Photography 1 course. The course covers more advanced aspects of digital photography techniques. Students will have the opportunity to explore different film and alternative photographic procedures along with large format printing of film and digital images. Studio lighting will be introduced and used to gain a technical understanding of light and camera functions. Emphasis will be placed on independently developed challenges for each project, weekly journals, and a final body of work at the end of the semester. A cohesive digital portfolio of finished work will be expected of each student at the end of the term. Some cameras are available on loan for student use, but it is strongly recommended that you supply your own DSLR camera or other digital camera if possible. 

 

CLASS EXPECTATIONS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENTS

Attendance- Please strive for an excellent record.

·      Photography class requires daily hands-on work.

·      Students are responsible for obtaining make-up work after an absence.

·      Absences will be monitored by the administration.

·      Students may lose the option for a numerical passing grade for a course if they are absent for more than 10 classes in 

       a semester course that meets every day or for 5 classes in a semester course that meets every other day.  Students   

       may lose the option for a numerical passing grade for a full year course if they are absent for more than 20 classes.             In the event that the student passes the course after exceeding 10 absences, their course grade is recorded as an S 

       and a grade of 60% is used for the purposes of GPA calculation.  School sponsored activities are not included in the

       total.

 

Late/Cut Policy- Please choose to arrive to class on schedule.

·      Class starts promptly with a daily outline of objectives for the day.

·      Late entries will directly effect a students habits of work grade.

·      Class cuts are a monitored by the administration. 

 

Project due dates- Due dates for assignments are given in advance.

·      Late assignments will affect H.O.W (Habits of Work) grades.

·      Make up work after a legal absence receives an extension based on absence(s).

·      Work that is more than 2 weeks late will not be accepted

 

Boundary issues on subject matter- Photos reflect appropriate subject matter.

·      Images with tobacco, alcohol, drugs or sex are not to be photographed or printed.  Present ideas to the instructor

       before shooting if unsure of appropriateness.

 

Food- A health and safety issue.

·      No food/drinks in rooms with chemicals or by computers & printers

·      Wash hands at end of class.

 

Electronic devices- Cell phones are NOT permitted in class. Cell phone cameras can be used for the class NOT IN THE CLASS!  Headphones can be used with Chrome Books or iMacs.  Using cell phones for photographing and or editing should be done on your own time.

STUDENTS MUST SHARE IMAGES TAKEN WITH CELLPHONES TO GOOGLE DRIVE BEFORE ARRIVING TO CLASS.  STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ACCESS IMAGES ON CELLPHONES DURING CLASS.

​

Misuse of technology will be reflected on H.O.W. scores, and weekly participation grades.

BUHS CELLPHONE POLICY:

• Cell phones will remain in backpacks or lockers during class, advisory or study hall

• Cell phones must be off or on airplane mode

• Cell phones visible in class will be confiscated

• Wearable devices such as smart watches must have notifications turned off.

• Cell phones may be use in the cafeteria/ courtyard during lunch and in hallways during block class passing time only

Respect others- All students will show respect and tolerance for all individuals in and out of this class.

 

Hall Passes/Sign-out- Permission must be granted for pass use, times of use must be recorded on the sign-out sheet. 

        Abuse of bathroom privileges will result in a loss of privileges.   Students may be asked for their cellphone

        in exchange for a bathroom pass.

                

Supplies and Facility- You are part of the BUHS art community.

Do your share, and a little extra, to keep our art room, materials, and equipment in order.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY 2

 

·      This course is about advanced techniques in analogue and digital photography, this will include advanced photoshop

       techniques and studio work.

·      The student will use the skills learned in Photography 1 to take the next step of creating more unique and artistic

       photographic images.

·      This course will emphasize photography as an art form.

·      Our goal will be quality photography both compositionally and technically.

·      The student will learn more technically involved uses of the camera functions and equipment.

·      Written forms of assessment will include, written assignments and critiques,   including mid-term and final projects

        for the semester.

·      All projects will be included in a portfolio due at the completion of the course. (SO SAVE ALL YOUR WORK!)

 

Shooting assignments

·      Students will receive weekly assignments.

·      Assignments will be based off of critical elements and skills of photography that allow for exposure to various subject

       matter and visual challenges.

·      Projects are expected to be completed on time, or before each due date.

·      Personal time management is critical for successful completion of each project and the course.

·      Multiple assignments will be assigned each week.

Written work

·      Students are required to use the course website to receive all assignments, and use Google for submitting projects,

       papers, and presentations.

·      Students will be expected to learn photography vocabulary that will be used on a daily basis and every photographer

       should know.

·      Written assessments will include worksheets, quizzes/tests, critiques and research projects.

 

Photography Journal

·      Weekly journals will be kept on weekly photographic explorations or lost photographic opportunities.

Homework

·      Shooting assignments should be completed outside of class.

·      NO SHOOTING ON CLASS TIME. (Unless specified otherwise)

 

Project assessment

Students will be given a Proficiency rubric for each assignment.

Your overall grade will be based on completion of projects, journals, quizzes and tests, written assignments, and class participation.
